Guo Yu (Paul Yu Guo) is a photographer and visual artist working primarily across East Asia, documenting the quiet dialogue between architectural permanence, nocturnal light, and ephemeral human presence.
Artist Statement
My photographic practice is grounded in patient observation. Rather than staging moments or seeking rapid snapshots, I approach each location as a living spatial archive—whether it is the quiet alleyways of Nara under midnight rain, ancient timber temples in Shanxi, or the electric haze of urban summer fireworks.
Light operates as both subject and structure in my work. By working in ambient and nocturnal illumination, I aim to strip away visual clutter and reveal the underlying texture, dignity, and solitude of spaces that exist beyond ordinary daylight.

- Architectural Heritage & Spatial Geometry: Ancient Buddhist grottos, wooden temples, and monolithic rock sanctuaries across northern and western China.
- Nocturnes & Solitude: Night studies capturing damp street pavements, lantern illumination, and the contemplative quiet of historic cities after dark.
- Festivals & Ephemera: Atmospheric documents of Japanese summer fireworks (Hanabi), temple gatherings, and traditional celebrations.
